Medicinal Mushrooms

No, we aren’t talking about the psychedelic mushrooms here that give you hallucinations! We are talking about regular mushrooms that have been overlooked for too many years and are now becoming the hot new topic of discussion in the natural medical world.

Mushrooms are jam-packed with amazing nutrients and medicinal properties and because they are a natural food source, our bodies accept them and use them so easily! This means that we are able to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients that they have to offer.

You can find medicinal mushrooms in the form of a powder or as a liquid tincture. The difference between these two forms is that the powder contains the entire plant which has been dried and ground, whereas, the liquid form is an extract that uses alcohol to draw out the properties within the plant and can often be a lot stronger. It is safe to take these on a daily basis, however, depending on your condition and any medication you are on, it is best to speak to a qualified professional who can advise you regarding the best dosage for your situation.

This being said, please do not attempt to source and create your own mushroom tinctures unless you have studied foraging and have experience. There are still poisonous mushrooms out there!

So, let’s look at some of the latest researched mushrooms that are available in stores like Thrive.

Reishi

This is the most well-known and used mushroom for its immune boosting properties.

Reishi has been found to:

· Improve the immune system

· Support the nervous system and help to calm the mind

· Increase metabolism

· Support the liver and heart

· Fights and kills cancer cells

Turkey tail

Named after its resemblance to a turkey’s tail with lots of colours and lines.

This is a great immune modulating mushroom. This means that it is able to keep the balance between an overactive and underactive immune system. The herb Echinacea has this same property. This mushroom also contains strong antitumour properties and can assist with respiratory disease.

Shiitake

This mushroom is great for the digestive system. It helps the liver to function and reduces cholesterol and also has an impact on the immune system.

Cordyceps

This is the powerhouse of the mushrooms.

· It increases your energy and metabolism.

· It helps to improve the oxygen flow in the body and to the muscles, which makes it a great addition for exercise.

· It also assists with libido and sexual function, especially in males.

· It helps the lungs and kidney function

· It also has antibacterial properties

Lions mane

This is my personal favourite mushroom because it has such amazing healing properties!

Its main action is against neurodegeneration, which means that is supports the nervous system and brain and prevents any damage and breaking down of the nerves. It actually helps the nerves to grow back after they have been damaged, as in the case of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

· Increases memory and concentration

· Helps with stress and anxiety

· Protects and helps nerves heal
